I have now fiddled with my birthday bots. I’m a lucky boy. (Fanshobby Gunfighter was actually a purchase, but as he turned up on my birthday, he felt present-y.) My knee-jerk not-influenced-by-the-fact-that-these-are-warmly-appreciated-gifts assessments:
Fanshobby Feilong: Chunky fucker with slightly shitty feet, but he feels really unlike any other 3P Masterpiece and oozes character. Dragons FTW.
Fanshobby Gunfighter: Again, chunky, with two great modes, but simplistic to the point that I look at the price and raise an eyebrow suspiciously. Very low part count for a £100+ bot.
Maketoys Rioter Despotron: Yeah, this guy’s the business, though the bot is definitely stronger than the gun, however.
Badcube Speedbump: Both modes are rock solid (unlike Lorry where I thought both modes were compromised), and the build quality is great but that transformation can get fucked. That backpack. Seriously, I’m so over Badcube. Same story every time.
On a side note, I’ve now handled Badcube and MMC Trailbreaker, and Badcube and XTB Hoist. They all have pros and cons but none of them nail it. I think I preferred MMC Trailbreaker and, astonishingly, I’d probably go for XTB for Hoist (as fucked as parts of the design are). But all of them will go the moment Takara announces theirs.
I don’t know when it dawned on me. I think it was when I was bigging up Maketoys AGAIN in one of my reviews. I’m kinda desperate to award my first 5 Star review, and I found myself trying to remember what score I’d given my Maketoys figures. Then the cold truth struck me – I’ve not reviewed any of them! And in the one semi-review I did, a Spotter vs Visualizers write-up, I ruled in favour of Fanstoys!
So until now I’ve been snapping pics as jpegs and then fiddling about with them in Photoshop. Following the lead of fellow Transformers collector Maz, instead here I’ve played with snapping in RAW format and then tinkering in Lightroom. Better? Worse? I have literally no idea.
I’ve not had much of a chance to get bots into the lightbox recently for an assortment of reasons. I recently had a bit of a health scare and whilst all is fortunately fine (horrific MRI claustrophobia panic attack aside), I am on some new meds and they’re knocking me for six. Plus, I’ve got a potentially big project (Transformers related!) in the very early and still shouldn’t be getting excited about stages that is hoovering up the time in which I am well enough to work.
We all have our own little rules to help keep our collection in check. For instance, one of mine is ‘Make Sure You Can Afford To Feed The Child, OK You Cash Spunking Thundertwat?’ I’ve so far managed to stick to that one. Go me.
… but you have to admire not only how stunningly GORGEOUS Maketoys’s Downbeat (Jazz) looks, but also the ability of one photo to sell a figure. I’d held off pre-ordering because I love Generations Toy J4zz so much (my highest ever review score at the time of writing). But those days are over.
